Dennis Stovallis the coordinator of publishing curriculum and publisher of Ooligan Press. He comes to Portland State University from Blue Heron Publishing, which he and his wife, Linny, founded. Dennis has won numerous awards and recognition for book design, contributions to the literary community, and excellence in writing. He has served on the boards of the Pacific Northwest Writers Association, the Oregon Writers Colony, the Northwest Association of Book Publishers, and the Oregon Publishers Industry Alliance. He is currently a trustee of Literary Arts, Inc., where he also serves on the Oregon Book Awards advisory committee. In addition to organizing the publishing program, Dennis teaches Introduction to Book Publishing and leads several graduate seminars.

Susan Applegate teaches Book Design and Production. She has a BA in art history from the University of Pennsylvania and an MAT in art teaching from Reed College; she also attended the summer publishing course at Stanford University. Susan has experience as a freelance book designer, was production manager for the Oregon Historical Society Press, and currently works as art director designing books for Timber Press.

Kent Watson has seventeen years of highly successful global experience in the trade, textbook, periodical and distribution businesses. He began his career at the Tattered Cover Bookstore as the newsstand buyer. From there, he joined Ingram Periodicals as field sales manager covering international and national key accounts. Kent then went on to join notable publishing houses Houghton Mifflin and Timber Press (now a division of Workman). Kent also propelled the launch of Academic Internet Publishers, Inc., a venture e-commerce start-up for the higher education market. Kent’s broad expertise in sales and marketing has driven the prosperity of the aforementioned organizations. His unique background covers all aspects of the book industry: publishing, wholesale, retail, libraries and academic institutions. In 2006 Kent joined the board of Ooligan Press and also joined Publishers Association of the West, which is the premier professional development association for independent publishers. In 2007 he spearheaded their membership drive, doubling their ad sales for the association directory. Kent is now the Executive Director of Publishers Association of the West.

Marty Brown teaches Publishing Management. She has enjoyed a long and varied career in newspapers, commercial printing, and book publishing. She worked for Timber Press for many years, most recently as chief operating officer and marketing director. She is now the proprietor of Letterary Press, a boutique letterpress shop. She has a MS in publishing studies from New York University, and a BA from Evergreen State College.

Abbey Gaterud is an MS graduate of the PSU book publishing program and now teaches the Ooligan Press Studio class. She has a BA in English from Lewis & Clark College. Abbey has experience in design and production management, non-profit fundraising, and freelance book design. She recently started a small publishing company, Blueroad Press.

John Henley teaches Bookselling. John is a noted antiquarian bookseller specializing in Western Americana. He has worked in all areas of bookselling, from retail management to new, used, and antiquarian sales. John is also an author. John is currently manager of The Great Northwest Bookstore in Portland.

Vinnie Kinsella, a graduate of PSU’s book publishing program, teaches Book Editing and Copyediting. Over the years, Vinnie has been contracted by a number of writers, businesses, and non-profit organizations in need of his professional experience. He has worked closely with authors whose writings range in style from historical fiction to theological discourse. His broad background as an editor, writer, and document designer led him to start his own freelance company: Declaration Editing & Design.

Karen Kirtley teaches Advanced Book Editing. She began her editing career at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in New York City. In Portland she created the editorial department at Timber Press/Amadeus Press, where she later served as editorial director. Her proudest accomplishment is the book Alma Rosé: Vienna to Auschwitz (Portland: Amadeus Press, 2000), which she co-wrote and edited. Today she works as a freelance editor and book developer.

Michelle Roehm McCann teaches Children's Book Publishing. She is an award-winning children’s book author and has worked as a children's book editor/art director for sixteen years. Michelle currently works for several Northwest publishers including Graphic Arts Center Publishing, Sasquatch Books, and Beyond Words Publishing, where she founded the children’s book division in 1995. Michelle received her BA from Brown University and an MFA in writing for children from Vermont College.

Charles Seluzicki teaches Archeology of the Book. He earned his Master of Liberal Arts from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. He is an antiquarian bookseller specializing in poetry and fine press printing. For thirty years he has commissioned and published numerous fine press editions of contemporary poetry and prose.

Brenda Smith teaches Marketing for Writers, which focuses on finding the right publisher for an author’s work. A graduate of the publishing program, Brenda is a successful novelist who realized that the success or failure of her novels really rested with her, despite the commitment of her publishers. 

Anmarie Trimble teaches Online Magazine Publishing and is editor of the award-winning, experimental Born Magazine, where she brings together creative writers and multimedia artists who create literary artworks that appeal to diverse audiences. Her poetry has appeared in Field: Contemporary Poetry and Poetics, Black Warrior Review, and other publications.
