Graduate Requirements

You must complete at least 48 credits of graduate classes with a GPA of 3.00 or higher. Class requirements for the book publishing program are as follows:

Core Courses (20 credits):

* WR 560 Introduction to Book Publishing
* WR 561 Book Editing
* WR 562 Book Design and Production
* WR 563 Book Marketing and Promotion
* WR 564 Bookselling
* When available, Publishing Research or Intellectual Property & Copyright courses can be substituted for one of the above core courses.

Electives (28 credits):

* Electives can include graduate-level classes taken from other strands of the MA/MS in writing, from English, or from another discipline. Thought should be given to how these courses will be reflected in your portfolio.
12 credits of electives must be taken in WR-prefixed graduate courses (these include other writing classes by permission of the instructors and all publishing classes outside the core).
16 credits may be taken in any subject at the graduate level, and may also include writing/publishing courses.
* You can also arrange an internship with a publisher to count toward your total credit.
* 3 credits are available during the quarter you are working on your portfolio. Register for ENG 501 Research.

Other Requirements for the MA/MS in book publishing:

* Submit a portfolio reflecting your work and professional growth.
* Write an essay of 5-10 pages on a topic arising from your portfolio.
* Complete an oral examination of your work with your graduate committee.

The book publishing program is a portfolio program and no thesis option is available. You will need to present your portfolio, written essay, and oral examination to a graduate committe consisting of your advisor, the head of the department, and a third faculty member of your choice. The third member must have a master's degree or higher. You are in charge of negotiating the graduate committee that will review your portfolio with your advisor.

All coursework for the master's degree must be completed within six years from the time you begin your coursework. Any course recieving a grade of C+, C, or C- is below the graduate standard and may be used toward the degree only with specific written approval from the academic department. You must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.

You are required to take a minimum of 1 credit in the term in which you complete your oral exam and essay. If you do not pass at any of the three stages (portfolio, take-home essay, and oral exam), you will be required to redo this portion before you can move on to the next portion. If you do not pass your oral examination, you only have one chance to retake this portion of the testing.

Note that the MS option does not require students to demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English. In cases where a student does opt to demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English, the MA in writing: book publishing will be awarded. If you are planning to complete an MA, please contact the language department for information on requirements.
